Marcin Tybura vs. Serghei Spivac

Another Ultimate Fighting Championship Fight Night is scheduled for Saturday, August 10th, with the heavyweights set to star at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. More specifically, Marcin Tybura will take on the Moldovan Serghei Spivac in a rematch of their 2020 bout, which the former won via unanimous decision. Spivac is also looking to rebound from his TKO loss to Ciryl Gane last September, while Tybura has all the momentum after submitting Tai Tuivasa in March. But which of these fighters is the favourite among Ireland’s best betting sites, and who do I think will prevail in Nevada?

🥊Tybura vs Spivac 2 Betting Odds

The pre-bout odds for this tantalising rematch have yet to be published. However, the 38-year-old Tybura has been the underdog in six of his previous seven fights since October 2021, including his submission of Tai Tuivasa at a previous UFC Fight Night. He won despite being priced at 2.02 in this bout, which implied a 49.50% probability of him being victorious. Spivak was also the 2.70 underdog prior to his defeat against Ciryl Gane last time out, so the bookmakers may be loathe to make him the starting favourite in Las Vegas.

💎Tybura vs. Spivac 2 Prediction

Many thought that Spivac’s ground and grappling game would prove too much for Ciryl Gane last time out, but the ‘Good Kid’s’ ferocious power proved too much as he secured a second-round TKO and ‘Performance of the Night’ bonus. Still, Tybura lacks demonstrable knockout power, often using his boxing skills merely as a way of closing distance, initiating a clinch or executing a double leg attempt. To this end, ‘Tybur’ scarcely uses his jab at all, favouring heavy power shots that are forceful rather than concussive. However, he is one of the few fighters at 265 lbs to showcase consistent head movement, enabling him to operate as a good counter puncher with an effective check hook.

This was evident when the pair first did battle more than four years ago. Spivac struggled to land cleanly on Tybura here, registering with just 31% of his attempted significant strikes. Although he enjoyed some success in the second round, he only landed 15% of his significant strikes in round three, while ‘Tybur’ connected with 43 of his attempted 106 strikes overall (40%).

Spivac fared even worse in the clinch and on the ground. In fact, he failed in his single takedown attempt against Tybura during 15 minutes of action, while his opponent completed two of eight attempted takedowns (25%) overall. This augmented an excellent counter-punching display and helped secure a deserved points victory, and while both fighters have experienced peaks and troughs, neither has demonstrated marked improvement or decline.

Although it can be argued that Spivac’s bouts often end early, few opponents are as rounded or durable as Tybur. So, given the experienced Pole’s previous win against Spivac and his impressive submission against Tai Tuivasa last time out, I’m tipping him to prevail again here via late submission or decision.

My Prediction: 🏆 Marcin Tybura to Win

🚀Marcin Tybura Overview

Tybura vs spivac

Despite his advancing years, Tybura has won of three of his previous four bouts, since a unanimous decision loss to Alexander Volkov in October, 2021. Overall, he has won 25 of his 33 MMA career bouts (75.75%), although seven of his eight defeats have come in 19 fights under the UFC banner.

At the time of writing, he has a win rate of 63.15% in the UFC, while his haul of victories includes a dominant unanimous decision win over Spivac in February 2020. Two of the three scoring judges called it a shutout victory for Tybura after 15 minutes of action, with the Polish veteran landing with 40% of his significant strikes (compared to 31% for Spivac) and proving much more effective on the ground.

This meld of accurate striking and relentless grappling highlights just how adaptable and rounded Tybura is as a fighter. The way in which Tybura achieves his victories is also evidence of this. He has won nine of his 25 MMA bouts by way of knockout (36%), while submitting seven opponents (28%). He has also been awarded nine decisions, so he is more than capable of lasting the distance.

If Tybura has a weakness, however, it’s that he’s susceptible to being stopped. Five of his eight career defeats have seen him lose by way of KO or TKO (62.5%) with Derrick Lewis, Shamil Abdurakhimov, Augusto Sakai and (most recently) Tom Aspinall having all stopped him in the UFC. Spivac also has a knockout rate of 44%, and is more than capable of rendering his opponent unconscious.

⭐Serghei Spivac Overview

spivac-ufc-fight-banner

Spivac certainly has youth on his side, too, as he’s nine years younger than his opponent at the next UFC Fight Night. While he has less experience and has contested fewer bouts, he has won 16 of his 20 career bouts (80%) and boasts a 7-4 record in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Spivac is arguably a more effective finisher than Tybura, too. After all, 14 of his 16 wins have been achieved either by stoppage or submission (87.5%), with only two being decided by the judges’ scorecards. He has only once dropped a points decision, too, so he’ll expect to end this bout early if he can get on top of Tybura. This remains a significant ‘if,’ however.

Overall, four of his last five UFC bouts have ended with a technical knockout, with Spivac winning two of these (against Augusto Sakai and Greg Hardy) and losing against Gane and Tom Aspinall. None of his previous five encounters have gone beyond the second round, while he hasn’t gone the distance since defeating Aleksei Oleinik by decision in June 2021.

Like Tybura, however, Spivac is a well-rounded fighter with a consistent jab, strong grappling game and exceptional ‘whizzer’ kick. Also key to his armoury are chain clinch trips and powerful throws, which are arguably unmatched in the heavyweight class and capable of taking down even the strongest of opponents.

🏆Tybura vs Spivac 2 Betting Offers

This is clearly an even-matched bout, despite the relatively dominant nature of Tybura’s win over the ‘Polar Bear’ in their first meeting back in 2020.
