The long-awaited rematch between Ciryl Gane and Alexander Volkov will take place at UFC 310 on Sunday, 8th December. The bout, which was removed from UFC 308 after the 36-year-old Volkov incurred a knee injury, will now take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and see the pair do battle in the Octagon for the second time.
‘Bon Gamin’ defeated Volkov by unanimous decision in the first fight in June, 2021, while these two are now ranked second and third respectively in the heavyweight division. But who will prevail this time around? I’ll offer my prediction and analyse the latest odds in this comprehensive UFC betting guide.
💯 Gane vs Volkov Betting Odds
Gane is the heavy betting favourite to beat Volkov for the second time in Nevada, with his average odds of 1.38 implying a 72.46% probability of a win for the former interim heavyweight champion.
Conversely, the seasoned Volkov (who has never previously challenged for the heavyweight crown in the UFC) is priced as high as 3.03 to avenge his previous defeat against Gane. So, the odds imply just a 33.00% probability of ‘Drago’ achieving this objective.
While the 34-year-old Gane is a deserved favourite, the odds of a Volkov victory are arguably a little long. After all, he has won four successive UFC bouts at heavyweight since March 2022, including a unanimous decision victory over the fourth ranked Sergei Pavlovich last time out.
Conversely, Gane has lost two of his previous four fights, both of which saw him step to challenge Francis Ngannou and then Jon Jones for the heavyweight crown. He was submitted in the first round by Jones at UFC 285, although he recovered to knockout Serghei Spivac in two superb rounds last September. Here’s a concise summary of the latest Gane vs Volkov odds.
🏆 Gane vs Volkov Prediction
No Gane vs Volkov betting preview would be complete without a detailed look back to the first bout between the pair. Here, Gane produced a relatively dominant performance to earn a unanimous decision, despite Volkov starting strongly and producing a higher output (and superior accuracy) during the first round.
Overall, Gane attempted slightly more significant strikes than Volkov during the bout (255 vs 241), while landing with greater frequency. 135 of his attempted strikes found the target (52%), while Volkov landed 115 strikes in total and achieved a marginally lower accuracy rate of 47%.
Gane also enjoyed significantly more success when targeting the head and body, as he showcased superior variety and largely dominated at range. 35 of his attempted 48 body strikes found the target (73%) during the five rounds, as Volkov focused on delivering lower leg kicks and displacing Gane from the centre of the Octagon.
Interestingly, all but two significant strikes were attempted from distance, with virtually no action observed in the clinch or the ground. In fact, there were only four takedown attempts during the 15 minutes of action (all by Gane), while none of these proved successful.
I expect a similar type of fight in Las Vegas, with both fighters looking to dominate stand-up exchanges and land a high volume of strikes. Although Volkov may once again start quickly in a bid to disrupt Gane’s balance, Bon Gamin is quicker, more mobile and boasts a slightly superior reach. So, I expect him to take control once again with his strike variety and excellent defence, and ultimately prevail via another judges’ decision.
My Prediction: Ciryl Gane to win via a decision 🏆
⚡Ciryl Gane Overview
Gane’s devastating TKO of Spivac earned him the ‘Performance of the Night bonus’ at last September’s UFC Fight Night. Of his twelve MMA career wins, six have been achieved by way of knockout or TKO (50%), while Bon Gamin has submitted three opponents and earned three decisions (all unanimous). In the UFC alone, Gane has won nine out of 11 bouts (81.81%). Four of his victories with the promotion have come by way of knockout, including his previous three against Spivac, Tai Tuivasa and Derrick Lewis. Undoubtedly, 6 ft 5 in Frenchman is renowned as an outstanding striker, landing 856 of 1,406 attempted significant strikes (60.88%) during his career.
His upright defence is also deceptively impressive, thanks in part to his 81-inch reach. To this end, has lands an average of 5.49 significant strikes per minute in the UFC, while absorbing a paltry 2.19. His knockout ability is also aided by his willingness to target the head, with 44% of his significant strikes landing above the shoulders.
Of course, Gane’s two tilts at the UFC Heavyweight championship have both ended in defeat, including his aforementioned loss to Jon Jones. He also dropped a unanimous decision to Francis Ngannou after five gruelling rounds on January 22nd, 2022, despite dominating and outlanding his opponent during the first six minutes.
The tide turned when Ngannou switched to wrestling and leveraged his superior grappling grills, and this arguably remains a weakness in Bon Gamin’s game at the time of writing.
⭐ Alexander Volkov Overview
Despite being signed by the UFC in September 2016, Volkov has never previously challenged for the heavyweight championship. However, he’ll arrive in Nevada in the best possible form, having won his last four fights since being submitted by Tom Aspinall in the first round of their bout on March 19th, 2022.
Overall, Volkov has won 38 of his mammoth 48 MMA career fights (79.16%). An impressive 24 of these victories have come via knockout or TKO (63.15%), while the veteran has submitted four of his opponents and earned 10 decisions. Under the banner of the UFC, Drago has contested 16 bouts and won 12 (75%), while one of his four losses with the promotion came in the previous fight against Gane.
What makes the rematch so fascinating is that these two competitors are both strikers with similar fighting styles. This is borne out by the stats, which show that Volkov has attempted 2,064 significant strikes during his career and landed 1,185 (57.41%).
This is a similar rate of success to Gane, although Volkov is known to target his opponent’s head even more frequently. In fact, 707 of his significant strikes have landed above the shoulders (59.66%), while 966 (81.51%) have been delivered in an upright stance.
The two are also similar in terms of their output. Volkov lands an average of 5.13 significant strikes per minute (compared to 5.49 for Gane), while he absorbs 3.00 and is arguably a little easier to hit than his opponent. The difference is marginal, however, so I expect the two to engage in another close encounter at the iconic T-Mobile Arena.
💥 Gane vs Volkov: The Long Road to the Match
All predictions and Gane vs Volkov betting tips will be informed in part by each fighter’s recent form. As I’ve touched on, Volkov has won four successive bouts and five of his previous six since losing to Gane in the first fight on June 26th, 2021, with interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall the only fighter to defeat him during this sequence.
Three of his last four wins have all come inside the distance too, with Tai Tuivasa (Ezekiel choke), Alexander Romanov (TKO) and Jairzinho Rozenstruik (also TKO) failing to take Volkov beyond the six-minute mark. However, Gane represents a significant step-up in class, while Volkov has a mixed record at best against opponents ranked in the top 10.
While Gane has lost two of his last four fights, these have come in titanic heavyweight title clashes against Francis Ngannou and the formidable Jon Jones. Although he failed to last a round against Jones, he pushed Ngannou all the way in a keenly contested bout and even managed to outland ‘The Predator’ at UFC 270.
Prior to this run, Gane had won 10 career successive bouts, including seven in the UFC. This sequence featured dominant victories against top-10 contenders Derrick Lewis and Jairzinho Rozenstruik, so Gane is both seasoned and historically successful at this level.
