✔️ Welsh Open Betting Tips
Now that we have taken a look at the Welsh Open betting odds that the bookies are offering for ten players who are in with a shout of winning this year's competition, it is time for me to provide you with some betting tips.
Tip 1 – Back Mark Selby to be the 2024 Welsh Open Winner
Mark Selby, it is fair to say, has not had the best of times over the last few seasons, but we all know what a quality player he is when he is playing at the top of his game. He has only won one title over the last three seasons, which was last year's English Open. However, the "Jester from Leicester" has shown signs of getting back to his best this season, making it to the final of the British Open, the semis of the Shanghai Masters, and the last eight of the Masters, World Grand Prix, and the UK Championship.
With Ronnie O' Sullivan and Judd Trump having pulled out from this year's Welsh Open, he has become the bookmaker's favourite to go on and lift the title. With his recent good form, I can see him going all the way, and it will be a huge relief for him if he does as a player of his quality should be winning more.
If you want to bet on Selby to win, then Betway are offering odds of 6.00.
Tip 2 – Mark Allen and John Higgins are Outside Contenders
Mark Allen: The man from Northern Ireland has been in fine form over the last couple of seasons, winning a total of five tournaments. During the 2023/2024 season he has won the Snooker Shoot Out and the Champion of Champions, but it has tended to be feast or famine for the Irishman. If he can make it through the first two or three rounds and get his cue action going, then he has as good a chance as any of winning this event. If you want to bet on Allen to win, then Unibet are currently offering odds of 10.00.
John Higgins: In the previous six snooker seasons, Higgins has won just three titles, which is honestly not good enough for a player with such quality. He made it to six finals in the 2021/22 season, and ended up winning just the one. During the 2023/24 season, he has made it to the semi-finals of four competitions, so he seems to have found a bit of form. There are not many players who will relish playing the "Wizard of Wishaw", and he will be confident of going deep in the event. If you want to back Higgins to win, then you can find odds of 8.00 at Betway.
Tip 3 – Jack Lisowski and Neil Robertson are My Ones to Ignore
Neil Robertson: He won four titles in 2021/22 and we all thought that he would go on and challenge for snooker's biggest prizes in the following years, but it has just not worked out that way for the Aussie. Since then, he has not made it to one final, while in the eight tournaments that he has qualified for this season, he has been knocked out in the first round a total of six times. Something is seriously off with the Australian's game at present, so I would not back him to win the 2024 Welsh Open. If you want to ignore my advice, then you can find odds of 8.00 at Unibet.
Jack Lisowski: I really like Lisowski as a player because it is clear that he has plenty of talent, but he just seems to have a mental block when it comes to winning the big matches. Everyone in the snooker world is willing him to win his first title, but he needs to get over his mental hurdle first. If you have read previous snooker predictions of mine, you will know that I often suggest against betting on Lisowski to win, and I recommend against it again. My advice is not being forced upon anyone, so if you think he will go on to win, then Betway are offering odds of 21.00.
Betting Market | Selection | Odds |
---|---|---|
Welsh Open Winner | Mark Selby | Odds of 6.00 at Betway |
Welsh Open Contenders | Mark Allen and John Higgins | Odds of 10.00 at Unibet and Odds of 8.00 at Betway |
Players to Consider Ignoring | Neil Robertson and Jack Lisowski | Odds of 8.00 at Unibet and Odds of 21.00 at Betway |
🔮 Welsh Open Predictions 2024
We know that many of our Irish punters like doing a spot of snooker betting on big events such as the Welsh Open, and below you can find our predictions on who will win the latest event.
⭐ Best Welsh Open Betting Sites
The majority of bookmakers will offer some sort of betting options when it comes to the Welsh Open. However, some are better than others, and below we have provided with more details about three of the very best:
1️⃣ LeoVegas: Best Welsh Open Mobile Betting Site
Nowadays, many sports bettors like to have the option of being able to place bets on their favourite sports from wherever they happen to be, which is why it is imperative that bookmakers ensure that their site is mobile compatible with a range of devices. When it comes to mobile betting, there are not many bookies out there that can compete with LeoVegas - they have not won "Mobile Operator of the Year" on numerous occasions for nothing.
Not only do they provide a quality mobile gambling experience, they also offer some of the best odds around and a range of markets for big snooker events such as the Welsh Open. It was actually quite tricky to find bookies offering outright winner odds for the Welsh Open, but LeoVegas did not let us down.
If you want to find out more about LeoVegas Sports, then check out our LeoVegas Sports review
2️⃣ Betway: Best Welsh Open Market Betting Site
The best sports betting sites in the world will always offer their punters a wide range of markets to ensure that variety is not in short supply. Betting on the outright winner can be fun, but things would get boring pretty quickly if that was the only thing that you could end up betting on. When it comes to Welsh Open betting, Betway are offering the most in-play markets as you can bet on the following:
- Frame winner
- The player to pot the first ball
- The first legal colour to be potted in a frame
- Whether a player will make a 50+ or a 100+ break
- The first player to a set number of points
If you would like to find out more about Betway before completing your registration, take a few minutes to check our in-depth Betway review.
3️⃣ Unibet: Best Welsh Open Odds Betting Site
Whenever you are betting on any sport, it is of the utmost importance that you do so with the best odds around as this is how you make sure that you get the best value out of any bet that you are fortunate enough to win. When it comes to great odds, you will not be disappointed by the offerings at Unibet as they have some of the best odds around when it comes to the Welsh Open - as you can see from the odds table that I provided earlier on in this guide.
Alongside their top odds, they also offer a nice range of betting markets, so boredom is not something that will creep into play when you are betting at Unibet. It is easy to see why it has made my list of top three bookies for betting on the Welsh Open 2024.
Those who want to find out more about Unibet before opening an account with them can do so by reading our in-depth Unibet review.

📋 The Welsh Open Snooker Format
Before you ahead and bet on any competition in any sport, you need to know the format that is being used, so this is what I am going to take a look at in this section of my guide.
Qualifying for this competition took place between the 25th and 27th of January, and a total of 64 players qualified for the main event. The Round of 64 started on the 12th of February, and there is a knockout format being used - thus, if a player loses one game, they are eliminated from the competition. I have listed the number of frames in each round below:
- Last 64: Best of 7 frames
- Last 32: Best of 7 frames
- Last 16: Best of 7 frames
- Quarter-Finals: Best of 9 frames
- Semi-Final: Best of 11 frames
- Final: Best of 17 frames

🔝 Welsh Open Top Players
Let us now take a look a closer look at three of the top contenders for the 2024 Welsh Open:
1️⃣ Mark Selby
The Englishman has won a total of 22 ranking titles and has been the World Champion no fewer than four times (2014, 2016, 2017, and 2021), highlighting what a talent he has. He owes his success to the fact that he has one of the best safety games in the sport. If fellow players get into a safety battle with him, then they usually end up coming out of a loser. He also has a habit of slowing the game down so that his opponents have to play at his pace.
2️⃣ Mark Allen
Mark Allen, who has 10 ranking titles to his name, is known as "The Pistol" because he is deadly accurate when in and amongst the balls, and does not usually give his opponents a second life when they make a mistake. In addition to this, he is actually one of the hardest hitters in the game, as can be seen when he rifles the balls in to the middle of the pockets. He has struggled with his weight in the past, which has impacted his game, but he has shed that and is now also performing much better at the table. Nobody will want to come up against him, that is for sure.
3️⃣ John Higgins
John Higgins has won a total of 31 ranking titles and, like Selby, he also has four World Championship titles to his name (1998, 2007, 2009, and 2011). When it comes to break building, there are not many players on the circuit who can keep up with the Wizard of Wishaw. He might not have won much in recent seasons, but we all know how talented his is, and he will be extra confident of winning the Welsh Open again, especially since Trump and O'Sullivan have opted not to compete.
🏆 Who Are The Previous Winners?
It is always worth checking out the players that have won a tournament before as some just happen to always bring their A game to certain events. For example, Ronnie O'Sullivan rarely loses when he is playing in Shanghai. With this in mind, in the following table, you can find the previous ten winners of the Welsh Open:
Date | Winner | Runner-Up | Score |
---|---|---|---|
2013 | Stephen Maguire (Sco) | Stuart Bingham (Eng) | 9-8 |
2014 | Ronnie O’Sullivan (Eng) | Ding Junhui (Chn) | 9-3 |
2015 | John Higgins (Sco) | Ben Woollaston | 9-5 |
2016 | Ronnie O’Sullivan (Eng) | Neil Robertson (Aus) | 9-5 |
2017 | Stuart Bingham (Eng) | Judd Trump (Eng) | 9-8 |
2018 | John Higgins (Sco) | Barry Hawkins (Hkg) | 9-7 |
2019 | Neil Robertson (Aus) | Stuart Bingham (Eng) | 9-7 |
2020 | Shaun Murphy (Eng) | Kyren Wilson (Eng) | 9-1 |
2021 | Jordan Brown (Nir) | Ronnie O’Sullivan (Eng) | 9-8 |
2022 | Joe Perry (Eng) | Judd Trump (Eng) | 9-5 |
2023 | Robert Milkins (Eng) | Shaun Murphy (Eng) | 9-7 |
