Glorious Goodwood comes to its thrilling conclusion on Saturday, 3rd August, with the Coral Stewards' Cup dominating the final day of action. This Group 2 race is contested over six furlongs, while the 2024 iteration will get underway at around 15:35 GMT. Dark Trooper and Albasheer are the ante-post favourites among Ireland’s best betting sites and bookmakers, while Andrew Balding’s Purosangue raced well in the G3 Coral Charge Spring Stakes last time out. But what do we know about the key contenders, and which runner do I think will prevail at Goodwood?
🏆Coral Stewards’ Cup Prediction
The four-year-old gelding Dark Trooper has been backed by a high volume of bets in recent weeks, particularly in the wake of his superb showing in the Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot last time out. He placed second here in a stellar field of 25, further demonstrating his ability over six furlongs and only losing by half-a-length to Unequal Love.
He also triumphed in the Prix Wizz Kid Turf Race at Saint-Cloud on May 25th and has now won seven career races over a distance of six furlongs or more. So, although Albasheer also won at the Ascot last time out (in the Class 2 Whispering Angel Handicap at the end of July) and will push Dark Tropper all the way at Goodwood, I expect the latter to ultimately finish first.
My Prediction – Dark Trooper to Win!
🏇 🏆Coral Stewards’ Cup Betting Preview
In addition to Dark Trooper and Albasheer, Purosangue is also in contention to win the 2024 Coral Stewards’ Cup. So, let’s take a closer look at each of these runners and their most recent form!
1️⃣ Dark Trooper
Overall, the A De Mieulle-trained Dark Trooper has won five of his 15 flat turf races to date while placing on eight occasions (53.33%). As I’ve touched on, he has recorded an impressive seven of these wins over a distance of seven furlongs or more while placing in the top two on both of his outings in 2024 so far.
Although he has never previously raced at Goodwood, he has recorded numerous victories in good and good-to-firm going. He also placed second in the competitive Wokingham Stakes in such conditions. So, he should be comfortable in the type of going expected at Goodwood this week, while his ante-post odds of around 7.00 means he offers value as both an outright and each-way pick.
Best Odds on Dark Trooper
2️⃣ Albasheer
The Archie Watson-trained Albasheer is now six years old, but he remains incredibly active and has already raced eight times in 2024. He has won three times during the calendar year too: recording victories in Newcastle (twice), and in the Whispering Angel Handicap at Ascot on July 27th. He took a keen hold from the outset in this race before powering clear in the final furlong and defeating Emperor Spirit by a head.
Ascot also saw the seasoned Albasheer place second in the A1R Services Heritage Handicap on July 13th. He struggled after a dwelt start here, but pressed well in the final straight and only ultimately lost by ½ a length. This gelding is clearly in good form and offer value as an each-way pick, despite only placing in six of his 18 career flat races so far (33.33%).
Best Odds on Albasheer
3️⃣ Purosangue
Purosangue is currently priced at around 10.00, but this three-year-old colt has youth on his side and also arrives at Goodwood in relatively good form. His second-place finish in the Coral Charge at Sandown saw him finish strongly over the final furlong and lose by just ¾ of a length, while he also placed third in the G3 Commonwealth Cup Trial Stakes at Ascot and pressed the leaders throughout.
Purosangue has competed four times in total in 2024. Overall, this Andrew Balding-trained runner has placed in seven of his 10 flat race outings to date (70%), while also winning two of these. However, he has only one won over six furlongs or more, so he arguably offers the best value as an each-way selection here.
Best Odds on Purosangue
⭐ Coral Stewards’ Cup Betting Tips
Orazio is also in contention to win the 2024 Coral Stewards’ Cup, while the three-year-old colt Sergeant Wilko can be backed at around 15.00 in the win market. So, to help you make the most informed selections possible, here are some expert horse racing betting tips and insights to keep in mind:
✅ Track Previous Performance at Goodwood
The biggest trend factor over the previous 20 years in the Coral Stewards’ Cup (and one that has produced in excess of 10 winners and an LSP of +48.00) is when runners had one career start at Goodwood. Interestingly, this counts against the ante-post favourite Dark Trooper, although Albasheer and Purosangue have previously competed once at Goodwood. The latter was defeated by Big Evs in the 2023 Molecomb Stakes, while Albasheer placed eighth in a field of 27 in the last iteration of the Coral Stewards' Cup.
✅ Prioritise Each-Way Betting
Only six of the previous 20 Coral Stewards’ Cup winners have started the race as favourites. Interestingly, starting favourites here have finished as low as 24th since 2004, highlighting the competitive nature of this G2 race and just how difficult it is to call. This is why you should prioritise each-way betting ahead of the 2024 Coral Stewards’ Cup iteration, with Dark Trooper, Albasheer and Purosangue all offering value in this market, given their recent form and current ante-post odds.
✅ Check Out Jockey Form at Goodwood
If you analyse jockey form over the course of the last five seasons at Goodwood, you’ll see that James Doyle has recorded the fifth-highest number of wins (21). These victories have come from 127 starts at a win rate of 16.53%, while his rides have also placed on 56 occasions and an impressive 44% of the time. He’s booked to ride the favourite Dark Trooper for the second successive race at Goodwood, affording this runner a potential competitive edge in a tight field. This certainly strengthens his case as a potential each-way selection here.
