🔮 Lennox Stakes 2023 Prediction

There’s a number of evenly matched runners in the Group 2 Lennox Stakes, many of whom will carry exactly the same weight to the start line. These include Ralph Beckett’s six-year-old gelding Kinross, who won four consecutive races between August and October 2022 including the Group 1 Qipco British Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot.

However, he subsequently came unstuck at the same venue in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes last time out, only briefly disputing the lead one furlong out before fading down the straight and finishing a disappointing seventh. So, despite his obvious pedigree and value as an each-way or free bet, he’s not expected to prevail over seven furlongs at Goodwood this summer.

But who could triumph in his stead?Well, Al Suhail is likely to start among the ante post favourites, especially as he’ll carry the highest weight (9st 8lbs) into the race. This well-travelled gelding has also won his last two races over seven furlongs at the Meydan track in the UAE, while he has triumphed in six of his 21 career flat races and placed in top three on 14 separate occasions.

While he finished sixth in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes last time out at Ascot (just one place in front of Kinross and five lengths behind the winner Khaadem), he actually performed better than expected and simply struggled to make any additional ground inside the final 110 yards. So, I’d argue he’s a more likely winner here, and I expect the Lennox Stakes betting odds to ultimately bear this out.

However, my own Lennox Stakes prediction is that the French runner Angel Bleu will prevail at Goodwood, with this talented four-year-old excelling over seven furlongs and also having youth on his side. He certainly timed his run to perfection when winning the 7f Pertemps Network Spring Trophy Stakes at Haydock in May, as he pulled away to lead inside the final furlong and rallied late on to prevail by a neck from Holguin despite considerable pressure.

So, although the Ralph Beckett-trained colt only finished seventh in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes at Ascot last time out, it should be noted that this race was run over one mile and Angel Bleu was also hampered badly some two furlongs out. He also has the distinction of winning two Group 1 races (at Saint-Cloud and Longchamp) during his career, so he has the pedigree and ability to win the 2023 World Pool Lennox Stakes.

Factor in the Weight Carried by Runners

If we further analyse the last 20 Lennox Stakes renewals, we can see that 89% of all winners carried a starting weight of between 8st 12lbs (124 lbs) and 9st 8lbs (134 lbs) into the race. Typically, the highest weight carried in a flat race is 9st 10lbs, whereas horses can hold as little as eight stone depending on their pedigree, past performances and Official Ranking (OR).

So, this highlights a significant trend, and while it’s a relatively broad weight range, it makes it easier to appraise how likely certain runners are to win the 2023 Lennox Stakes.

Al Suhail’s will carry 9st 8lbs into the race, for example, putting him at the higher end of the weight range and potentially handicapping him slightly against his rivals. Conversely, Angel Bleus and Kinross will have a starting weight of 9st 5lbs, as their respective ORs are slightly lower ahead of the Lennox Stakes.

While this data should be factored into your betting choices, just remember that horses carrying less than 9st are likely to be lowly-ranked and unlikely winners of a Group 2 outing. Similarly, runners carrying large weights of 9st 8lbs and above may be relatively handicapped and could struggle in an evenly matched field.

If you’re looking to identify value in a competitive Lennox Stakes field, it’s crucial that you analyse the historic performance of trainers and how they’ve fared in previous race iterations (and at Goodwood as a whole). During the last 20 renewals of this race, it’s Saeed bin Suroor who has achieved the most success, recording two winners and three placed finishes from just seven outings.

Interestingly, his stable has entered the excellent five-year-old gelding Shining Blue into the 2023 Lennox Stakes, with this particular runner having won the Class 2 Reg Bond Always And Forever Handicap over seven furlongs at York at the end of May. All things considered, he offers excellent value as an each-way bet, especially as running seven furlongs during his most recent win also represents a positive trend factor.

Andrew Balding is another successful Lennox Stakes trainer, with his 11 runners recording one win and two placed finishes since 2003. He’ll field the four-year-old gelding Berkshire Shadow this year, with this runner fresh from a solid fifth place finish in the Queen Anne Stakes from an SP of 26.00.

Interestingly, this horse is likely to see Balding continue his prolific partnership with jockey Oisin Murphy at Goodwood. Over the last five years, Balding and Murphy have individually led their respective fields at the course, while they’ve also combined to delver a joint-record 16 wins here (tied with Charlie Appleby and William Buick).

Remember That Age Matters in the Lennox Stakes

Age is never just a number when it comes to horse racing betting, especially on events like the Lennox Stakes that are open to runners aged three and older and tend to feature large and incredibly diverse fields as a result.

Despite this, a quick glance at historic Lennox Stakes results reveals that just one runner aged older than five has prevailed since the race’s inception in the year 2000. This was David Simcock’s seven-year-old Breton Rock, who triumphed in 2017 while being ridden by Andrea Atzeni.

What’s more, 16 of the 23 Lennox Stakes winners have been aged either three or four, while the remaining six victors were five years old. This is a clear and striking trend, and one that seems to highlight the way in which Goodwood suits the most youthful and quickest sprinters (especially in the firm going expected during the summer).

This is also another trend factor that benefits Angel Bleu (4), Berkshire Shadow (4), Lusail (4) and Age of Kings (3), while the five-year-old contender Shining Blue also cannot be ruled out on this basis.
