🔮 Prediction for the Memorial Tournament 2023
As one of five invitational events on the PGA Tour, the Memorial Tournament isn’t required to fill its field using the PGA Tour Priority Ranking System. So, the tournament usually commences with a maximum field of between 120 and 132, as opposed to the 156 who tend to start ranking PGA events. At the time of writing, the 2023 Memorial Tournament hasn’t been finalised, but the world’s top five players are expected to appear in Ohio.
This includes world number two and PGA Championship runner-up Scottie Scheffler, who finished 7-under and just two shots behind the eventual winner Brooks Koepka at Oak Hill in New York. The 26-year-old American remains one of the most consistent players on the tour, having won last year’s Masters and also tied for second in the 2022 US Open.
However, the course at Muirfield is arguably best suited to Ulsterman and world number three Rory McIlroy, who shot a respectable 2-under at the PGA Championship and has been in good form of late. Murfield certainly has an excess of par fours and long par threes, which affords McIlroy an edge with his improved driving and well-rounded iron game.
Of course, the same can be said for Collin Morikawa, who arguably has the best iron game on the tour and recently finished a respectable 1-under in the PGA Championship. The consistent Patrick Cantlay, who tied ninth at 4-under in the PGA Championship, is also likely to contend at Muirfield, especially given his own iron game and the fact that he placed second in the total driver statistics for 2022. He has also placed in the top 10 in six of the 13 tournaments contested this year.
However, my overall Memorial Tournament prediction is that McIlroy will win his maiden title at Muirfield, and his 24th PGA crown overall, with Morikawa also a strong contender who offers excellent value as an each-way bet.
My Prediction: Rory McIlroy to Win!

⭐ Memorial Tournament 2023 Betting Markets
With the current Memorial Tournament odds list and best wagering sites in mind, the next step is to consider some of the event’s most popular betting markets.
📌 Outright Winner
No Memorial Tournament preview of this type would be complete without referencing the outright winner market, which simply requires you to back the player who you think will win the event. This is the most straightforward example of an even money wager, as your selection will either win the tournament and bank you a return or place lower than first and cause you to lose your stake money. However, you can usually access competitive odds when backing an outright Memorial Tournament winner, with a field of around 120 including a number of potential winners.
📌 First Round Leader
Like most stroke play tournaments of this type, four 18-round holes are contested between Thursday and Sunday. The overall winner is the player with the lowest total under-par score, but you can also wager on the outcome of each individual round and which participants will make the cut. First-round leader betting is particularly popular at events like the Memorial Tournament, especially as some players (like Patrick Cantlay and Scottie Scheffler) are known to start quicker than others. Once again, you can get competitive ante-post odds on this market if you bet early enough.
📌 Top 5, 10 or 20 Finish
With many competitors at the Memorial Tournament, you can also access highly competitive odds when betting on players to finish in the top five, 10 or 20. Of course, these can also be difficult markets to predict, especially given the quality of the competing field and the fact that there are no lower-ranked Memorial Tournament 2023 qualifiers. The good news is that you can analyse historical player data using tools like the ‘Trending Table’, which outlines recent form and ranks competitors according to their average performance.
📍 Memorial Tournament Betting Tips
While understanding the most popular and generating markets is one thing, it’s quite another to make informed selections that deliver an optimal return on your stake. So, here are some Memorial Tournament betting tips ahead of the 2023 iteration!
✅ Place Early Outright Wagers
While I’m still waiting for the 2023 Memorial Tournament odds to be published, I’d recommend placing your outright, finish and each-way bets just as soon as they are. The reason for this simple; as ante post odds have a tendency to drift and shorten from the moment they’re made available, especially those pertaining to betting favourites who are likely to receive a significant influx of wagers. By betting early, you can maximise your potential returns without overly increasing your risk.
✅ Check the Tournament Weather Conditions
As with any PGA tour event, the Memorial Tournament can be directly affected by the prevailing weather conditions. More specifically, bad weather can have a detrimental impact on scoring and individual player performances, although gritty and consistent golfers like Matthew Fitzpatrick and Patrick Cantlay often deliver their best in wet or windy conditions. Regardless, you’ll need to check upcoming weather reports before placing your Memorial Tournament bets, while noting that Dublin, Ohio typically sees dry conditions and average temperatures of 19-20 degrees Celsius in June.
✅ Back Accuracy Over Power at Muirfield
The 7,300-yard, par 72 Muirfield course is highly challenging, with the combination of rough greens and demanding rough favouring accuracy and consistency over raw power. This explains why McIlroy is a good bet for 2023, as while he only ranks 193rd for driving accuracy this season, this aspect of his game has improved markedly of late while his seamless swing lends itself to consistent hitting and excellent iron gameplay. Interestingly, Russell Henley is the sport’s leading driver with an accuracy of 74.20% in 2023, while Collin Morikawa’s figure of 69.90 places him third and should be considered alongside his superb iron game.

📑 Memorial Tournament 2023 Format
While the format of the Memorial Tournament is expected to change in 2024, for now, this stroke play event will adhere to the same structure as previous years. This means that four consecutive, 18-hole rounds will be contested on Thursday, 1st June through Sunday, 4th June, with players striving to complete the course in the fewest possible shots. The field will be cut to 70 participants after the second round, while the player with the lowest total under-par score at the end of the four rounds will be crowned the winner. If there’s a tie, the tournament will be decided by a three-hole playoff.
📅 Memorial Tournament 2023 Schedule
As I’ve already touched on, the 2023 Memorial Tournament will start in earnest on Thursday, 1st June and conclude after the fourth and final round (and potentially a three-hole playoff) on Sunday, 4th June. Here’s a more detailed breakdown of the tournament schedule, with the exact tee times yet to be announced.

🔙 A Look Back at the 2022 Memorial Tournament
Historically, this invitational event has produced some less fancied winners, which is why making accurate Memorial Tournament betting predictions can be so challenging. Take the 2022 iteration, for example, which saw the current world number 31 Billy Horschel prevail by four strokes to win his first-ever PGA Tour title. He maintained a comfortable lead throughout the final two rounds, eventually scoring an even-par 72 to beat the rank outside Aaron Wise into second place. Patrick Cantlay and Joaquin Niemann trailed in joint-third place, six shots behind the unexpected winner.
🏁 Memorial Tournament History
The invitational Memorial Tournament was inaugurated in 1976, some nine years after Jack Nicklaus had purchased land in Dublin, Ohio and set about building the excellent Muirfield Village Golf Club. Roger Maltbie won the first-ever Memorial Tournament, while Nicklaus himself won the first of his two titles at Muirfield in 1977.
Nicklaus was the first player to win two Memorial titles in 1984, with Hale Irwin following suit the following year. Since then, a total of five players have won multiple Memorial crowns, although Tiger Woods is far and away the most successful having prevailed on five separate occasions between 1999 and 2012.
Interestingly, Woods also recorded the biggest-ever tournament win during his initial period of dominance in 2001, when he won by seven strokes. He has also produced some of the most stunning drives and shots in the history of the tournament, and you can see some of these for yourself in the video below!
As the name suggests, the tournament recognises different players’ achievements every year. The honoree for 2023 is Larry Nelson, who won 10 PGA Tour tournaments and three majors during his career (including 3 PGA Championship titles).
