🏁 History of the Munster Hurling Championships

The Munster Senior Hurling Championship is an annual Provincial hurling competition played out as part of the overall All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship. It has been played every year since it began in 1888 and is organised by the Munster Council, part of the wider GAA organisation. Since its inception Cork have won the most Munster Championships with fifty-four victories followed by Tipperary with forty-two wins. In recent years Limerick have become the dominant force in Munster winning the last six Munster Championships, including the 2024 competition, their twenty-fifth title overall ranking them third in the Munster Senior Championship Roll of Honour.

📑 Munster Championship Format

The Munster Senior Hurling Championship is contested in a Round Robin format consisting of the five counties that are entered. These counties for 2025 will be Limerick, Cork, Clare, Tipperary and Waterford. The five teams play each other once in the round robin league format with two points awarded for a win and one point for a draw. When all teams have played one another, the five teams are then ranked by the total points they have won, with the top two teams going on to contest the Munster Hurling Final and the third ranked county advancing to an All – Ireland Preliminary quarter-final.
