🏁History of the Leinster Hurling Championships
The Leinster Hurling Championships have been contested since 1888 under the auspices of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). The first Leinster Championship was held on Sunday, June 3rd, 1888, with Dublin, Kilkenny, Laois, and Kildare battling it out for the Bob O’Keefe Cup. Kilkenny emerged as the champion of the championship, beating Dublin at Portlaoise. Kilkenny won 14 of the first 26 Leinster Championships, Dublin won 7, and Wexford backed 5 until Laois won their first title in 1914. However, the former three teams have dominated the tournament, winning 121 out of the 136 competitions contested to date. Kilkenny claimed their fifth title on the trot in 2024 and the Cats former manager Brian Cody is the most successful in Leinster hurling history, winning 18 titles as boss from 1999-2022 before he stepped down.
📑 Leinster Championships Format
The Leinster Championship was once a straight knockout competition but it has undergone multiple restructures since the turn of the century. Since 2017 a new format led to the introduction of the round robin within the championship. There are six teams in the Leinster Championship and during the course of each season - from late April until June - each team plays the others once in a single round-robin system for a total of five games each. They receive two points for a win and one for a draw, while losers collect nothing. The top two teams in the group contest the Leinster Hurling Championship final in Croke Park, while the third-placed team qualifies for the All-Ireland preliminary quarter-finals. The fourth and fifth-placed teams are eliminated from the championship and the 6th placed team is relegated to the secondary tier Joe McDonagh Cup.
