🏏 Team News

The England and Australia squads for the first two test matches have been selected, and the players will be champing at the bit to get out there and bring glory to their country.

For England, Moeen Ali has come out of test retirement, following an injury to Jack Leech, who will miss the entire series with a lower back stress fracture. Mark Wood, Ollie Robinson, and Jimmy Anderson are fit, while Stuart Broad, Josh Tongue, and Matthew Potts will be pushing for a start. The English batting line-up basically selects itself with the likes of Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow and Ollie Pope looking to smash the Aussie bowling.

For Australia, they have decided to keep the faith with David Warner at the top of their order. He will soon retire from cricket, and the Barmy Army will be hoping that Broad has him on toast one last time. Even if England were to get a couple of early wickets against this Australian side, however, they would be foolish to rest on their laurels, because in Travis Head, Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, and Usman Khawaja, the Aussies have dangerous batsmen that can do plenty of damage. They also boast one of the world's most dangerous pace attacks with Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, and Scott Boland, all of which likely to provide plenty of headaches for England's batsmen.

⭐ The Ashes 2023 Betting Markets

Now that you know some of the top The Ashes 2023 bookies, let's take a look at some of the most popular Ashes betting markets.

Series Winner

This is the simplest way to bet on The Ashes. The aim is to try to predict the series outcome, and you will have three options to choose from: England to win, Australia to win, or series to end in a draw. Due to the simplicity of this option, however, you will not find the longest of odds, especially if you put your money on the favourite - which so far, is Australia.

Series Correct Score

If you are looking for a similar type of bet to above but you want longer odds, then you can find them by betting on the correct score of the series. With such a wager, you are predicting the final outcome of the series - e.g. England to win the series, 3-2. The options on offer will range from 5-0 England to 5-0 Australia, as well as options for a drawn series if you believe any of the test will end in a tied result.

Series Top Batsman

You could also challenge yourself to predict the batsman that will score the most runs in the series. This market concerns both teams, and you are searching for the batsman that will hit the most runs in the five matches. It does not matter if their team wins the little urn, so long as no other player can claim to have scored more runs than them. At the time of writing, Joe Root and Steve Smith are the bookies' favourites to claim this accolade.

Series Top Bowler

As you may have guessed, this is similar to the above, except that you are looking for the bowler that you think will pick up the most wickets in the five test matches. Pat Cummins is the bookies' favourite to be the top bowler, which is not surprising after the way he terrorised England in the previous Ashes series. For England, the bookmakers believe that Ollie Robinson will be the top bowler.

👂 The Ashes 2023 Betting Tips

There used to be a time when Australia were the favourites to win by a country mile, but the days of Ponting, Warne, McGrath, and Waugh are long gone. England and Australia are playing at a relatively similar level nowadays, which not only makes for a more entertaining series, it means the bookies are offering more interesting odds. Here are my top The Ashes betting tips below.

  • Back the Home Team: Nowadays, it feels there’s a 50/50 chance of either team winning an Ashes series. Both teams will be confident of claiming the little urn, but it is often the home team that comes out on top, seeing as they know the conditions better advantage. The Aussies are used to the ball coming onto them, but in English conditions they will have to play a swinging and seaming ball, something which the English batsman should be more used to doing.
  • Back the Best to Stand Up: The Ashes is where players can turn themselves into legends of the sport, and those who are backed to stand up will usually do exactly that. It would not surprise me if Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne put on a number of frustrating partnerships from the Aussies, but at the same time, a failure of a series for Joe Root would be a shock. It would also be surprising if we do not see Ben Stokes produce another moment of brilliance, given the number of outstanding career moments he has already racked up.
  • Scott Boland to Cause Carnage: Since he made his debut in 2021, Boland has made test cricket look like a walk in the park. He picked up 6/7 on debut versus England, and he has not slowed down, averaging an impressive 14.57 with the ball. Boland is very well suited for English conditions as he bowls a consistent line and length, rarely delivering a bad ball. I would be tempted to bet on him to be Australia's leading wicket-taker.
  • Harry Brook to be in the runs: England's Harry Brook has had an amazing introduction to test cricket, averaging close to 90 with the bat. In just seven matches, he has scored 818 runs, including four centuries and three 50s. When he is in the groove, not only is he hard to get out, but he is extremely destructive and scores his runs very quickly. To date, he has played just the one test in England, but now is his chance to show his quality on home soil. I would be tempted to put on Brook for top scorer from England.

📑 The Ashes Format

The Ashes format is test cricket, which means that each of the five matches has the potential to be played over the course of five days, which is why cricket fans consider it to be the most gruelling format of the sport. In the shorter formats, a weaker player can be carried, but this is not the case for test cricket. Any weakness in a player's game will be brutally exploited and be costly for their side.

Both teams will bat twice in each Ashes test, with the winning team being the one that manages to score the most runs across their two innings. In order to win a match, either team must pick up 20 wickets. If they do not, then the game will end in a draw, no matter how far ahead one team seems to be.

What England cricket fan can forget Monty Panesar and James Anderson blocking out 69 balls in order to secure an unlikely draw in Cardiff in 2009? This was a crucial result, and as a result, England then went on to claim the urn with a 2-1 victory.

📅 The Ashes Schedule

👀 A Look Back at The Ashes Series 2021/2022

The last Ashes series took place in Australia at the end of 2021 and the beginning of 2022. England turned up hoping to reclaim the urn that they lost in the 2019 Ashes series which finished in a draw, Australia getting to keep the urn as the the current holders. England were expected to struggle in the series, as they entered it completely out of form, and a 4-0 whopping proved that the pundits' predictions were right.

The first match was lost by nine wickets, the second by 275 runs, and England surrendered the urn meekly by losing by an innings and 14 runs in the third test match. They managed to avoid a complete whitewash by drawing the fourth, with a little bit of help from the rain, but a final loss in fifth match by 146 runs, meant bitter disappointment for travelling fans. It was an embarrassing display, and they will be looking to do much better this time around.

The top scorers for Australia were Travis Head (357), Marnus Labuschagne (335), and David Warner (273), while England's top scorers were Joe Root (322), Dawid Malan (244), and Ben Stokes (236).

Australia's top bowlers were Pat Cummins (21), Mitchell Starc (19), and Scott Boland (18), while England's top bowlers were Mark Wood (17), Stuart Broad (13), and Ollie Robinson (11).

📡 The Ashes Live Info Feed

🏁 The Ashes History

The concept of The Ashes is said to have come into existence when England were surprisingly beaten by Australia on home soil in 1882. A local paper wrote an obituary for English cricket, saying that its ashes will be going home with Australia. The next year, England set out on a tour of Australia, and England's captain at the time stated that they were off on a quest to get the ashes back.

Since The Ashes started, there have been 72 series, with England having won the urn 32 times and Australia having claimed a fraction more with 34 wins to their name. There have been a total of six drawn series on top. From the last ten Ashes series, England have managed to win five and draw one. In two of the previous four Ashes series, the Aussies have won without losing a single test.
