💸 Cricket Betting Markets

There are many cricket betting markets, as you should know by now, but some are more popular than others. In this section of my guide for online cricket betting, I am going to take you through some of the most popular ones.

Series Winner

International cricket teams fly across the globe in order to play matches against other nations, so to make the trip worth their while they will play more than one match in a particular format, in what is called a series. Ireland will fly to Zimbabwe in December to play three T20 matches and three ODIs, and the best bookies will let you bet on who will win each series.

Player to Score the Most Runs

You can put money on the player that you think will score the most runs for their team. For instance, if India are playing and you bet on Virat Kohli and he scores 58, if no other Indian batsman scores 59 or more, you will win your bet. If another player scores 58, the balls faced will be the determining factor.

Total Team Runs

Your chosen bookmaker will give you a figure when a team is batting, such as 307.5, and then it will be down to you to decide whether their final score will be over or under that number. If you back the Over market, then you will need 308 or more runs to be scored, while those who back the Under market will need no more than 307 runs to be scored.

Toss Winner

If you are the kind of gambler who likes a 50/50 bet, then you can put money on the team that you think will the coin toss. In a cricket match, a coin toss is done in order to determine the team that will bat first and the team that will bowl. The captain who wins the coin toss gets to choose. It is a really important part of a match since it can play a huge role in the eventual winner.

Total Wickets Over/Under

Your bookie will give a number, such as 15.5, and then you need to predict whether the total number of wickets will be Over or Under that figure. The total number of wickets that can fall in a cricket match is 20, so keep this in mind when making your decision.

Sixes Over/Under

When a batsman smashes the ball into the crowd, or sometimes out of the stadium, he adds six runs to his and his team's total. You can bet on nearly anything in cricket, and sixes are no exception to this rule. Your bookmaker will give you a number, such as 13.5, and then you have to decide on whether the total number of sixes hit will be above or below the figure provided.

First Over Runs

Do you want to try and predict the number of runs that will be scored in the first over of a match? If yes, then you can do exactly that. Your bookie, once again, will give you a number, such as 8.5, and then you can try to predict whether the actual figure will be higher or lower. The format being played should be taken into consideration here.

ℹ️ Cricket Betting Strategy

Placing a bet and hoping on luck is never a wise strategy, so in this section of my guide, I am going to give you some top cricket betting tips to keep in mind when betting cricket.

Know the Key Players

If a team is missing key players, whether through illness or injury, then it will have a negative impact on the team's chances of winning. You need to know who a team's key players are in order to gauge their chances of going on to win the game.

Consider Weather Conditions

The weather can have a big impact on a game of cricket. When the sun is out, the conditions are usually better for batting, while overcast conditions will suit the bowlers more. Also, if the outfield is wet because of dew, it can make life harder for the fielding team. Always consider the weather when placing cricket bets.

Live Betting

If you are unsure about what pre-match bet to place, wait until the match has started and watch it for a little bit. When you have some idea as to which way the match seems to be going, you can head to the live betting platform and place a more educated wager.

Team Form

You should always pay close attention to form as it fluctuates regularly. I do not recommend placing any sort of bet on a team or player that is woefully out of form. Yes, you might get lucky and win, but the most likely outcome is that you will lose money.

💾 Cricket Formats to Bet on

There are three different cricket formats, and these are Test, ODI, and T20. It is important to know the differences between the three when betting at cricket betting sites, whether that be via a desktop or cricket betting app. Thus, below, I have explained each one for you:

Test Cricket

For many, this is the ultimate form of cricket as it sees two sides battle it out for supremacy over five days. Each team bats twice to try and score as many runs as they can. To win, a team must pick up 20 wickets. This format tests the mentality and skill of each player, and those who do very well in this format go to be classified as legends of the sport.

One-Day Cricket

As you can tell from the name, a cricket match in this format is played on one day and finishes on that same day - a typical match lasts between 7-8 hours. Each team bats just once, and they have 50 overs, which is 300 balls, to try and score as many runs as possible. The excitement levels are usually higher than in Test cricket since players are more aggressive, knowing that they need to score quickly if they are to go on and win.

T20 Cricket

This used to be the sport's shortest format since a match is usually over in around three hours. Each team is given 20 overs, or 120 balls, to try and get as high a score as they can. The batsmen aim to hit each ball into the crowd or to the boundary ropes, so there is no shortage of entertainment in this format. The bowlers need to use all of their experience and skills in order to restrict their opponent's total. It really can be a fascinating watch.

100-Ball Cricket

This format, with its simplified rules, was designed to attract new audiences to the sport. Each team bats once and gets 100 balls to score as many runs as they can. In the formats above, there are 6 balls before a change of ends, but in this format, a chance of ends occurs after 10 deliveries. Bowlers in Test, ODI, and T20 cricket bowl 6 consecutive balls before there is a change, but in 100-ball a bowler will bowl 5 or 10 consecutive deliveries.

T10 Cricket

This is now the shortest cricket format out there, with each team getting 60 balls to post a score. A T10 match lasts just 90 minutes, so it is a great option for those who have a short attention span. It was a bit slow to take off, but more countries seem to be warming to it, and there are several different T10 leagues around the world now.

🎫 Cricket Events to Bet On

There are so many entertaining cricket events that Irish cricket punters can place their hard-earned money on, and I am going to take you through some of the most popular ones now.

The Ashes Series

For those of an Australian or English persuasion, there is no bigger event in Test cricket than The Ashes. There is a big rivalry between these two successful sporting nations in any sport, but when they meet on a cricket field, entertainment and drama are usually in abundance. Every cricket fan remembers Ricky Ponting’s run out by a substitute fielder, Monty Panesar and James Anderson's defiant stand in Cardiff, Freddie Flintoff's unplayable over to Ponting, and Shane Warne's ball of the century.

The Ashes series came into being when England were beaten by Australia in 1882, with a local paper claiming that English cricket is dead, and its ashes will be going back to Australia. England toured Australia the following year, and their captain declared it a quest to retain the ashes. They did just that.

Find out more in our Ashes betting guide.

ICC Cricket World Cup

This is cricket's biggest international event and, like the Rugby World Cup and FIFA World Cup, it takes place every four years. It has a one-day format, meaning that there is plenty of drama and excitement throughout the seven weeks that it takes place.

Only six nations have lifted the trophy, with Australia leading the way with no fewer than six titles - they are the reigning champions, having won the 2023 edition by beating the hosts, India, in the final. India and the West Indies have won it twice, while England, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka have won it once apiece.

You can find out more about the Cricket World Cup by following the link.

Indian Premier League (IPL)

The Indian Premier League, more commonly called the IPL, has become one of the most popular events in the cricketing world due to the riches that are available to those who play in it. It came into being in 2007, and millions and millions of fans tune in each year to watch the world's best T20 cricketers put on a fine show. The Chennai Super Kings and the Mumbai Indians have won five titles apiece, with the former being the current champions. Any bookie who is serious about what they do will offer a wide range of betting options for the IPL.

T20 Cricket World Cup

Another Cricket World Cup, but in this competition each team gets just 20 overs to score as many runs as possible. Due to its shorter format, every ball is an event, which is why the T20 World Cup attracts millions of viewers from all over the world when it is taking place.

The T20 World Cup usually takes place every two years, with the last one being played in 2022 - England won it for the second time. The next edition of this competition will be in the United States and West Indies in 2024, so check out the odds and betting markets at the top sports betting sites closer to the time.

The Hundred

This franchise involves eight women's and eight men's teams from major cities across Wales and England. As you should already know from the previous section, each team gets 100 balls to try and score as many runs as possible. The first edition of this competition took place in 2021, with the Oval Invincibles winning the women's edition and Southern Brave winning the men's edition. The Oval Invincibles retained their title in 2022, while the Trent Rockets won the men's competition. In 2023, Southern Brave picked up their first women's title and Oval Invincibles claimed their first men's title.

Australian Big Bash League (BBL)

This is another popular T20 competition that takes place in Australia in December, January, and February. Just like the IPL, all of the best T20 players from around the world head Down Under to put on a show for cricket lovers all over the world. It is not as popular as the IPL but is still definitely worth a watch. The Perth Scorchers are the most successful team with five titles under their belt, and they are also the reigning champions. The Sydney Sixers have won it three times, while Brisbane Heat, Sydney Thunder, Adelaide Strikers, and the Melbourne Renegades have one win each.
