The curtain has come down on the PGA Tour season for 2024 following Scottie Scheffler’s FedEx Cup victory last week. There is still plenty of golf to be played in 2024 with the end of season race on the DP World Tour as well as the Presidents Cup. Irish golf fans eagerly await to see how their own do every year, especially when they are plying their trade on the PGA Tour. One of these golfers is Shane Lowry. It has been a strong year for Shane Lowry in 2024 on the PGA Tour. Prior to the season ending Tour Championship, Lowry had earned $6,095,881 which impressively placed him 13th on the money list. Lowry finished tied 9th at the Tour Championship which earned him an extra $1,608,333 to put his yearly earnings on the 2024 PGA Tour to $7,704,214.

Lowry showed this year that he is one of the best players in the world and he has become one of the key players on the PGA Tour, often featuring in the key groups for the big events.

Lowry started the year not qualified for any of the signature events, meaning he would miss out on the raised prize money. He received an invitation to the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, finishing 3rd, giving him the boost he needed to have the 2024 that he had. Let’s take a look at the key moments in Lowry’s year as well as his major championship performances.

A Return to the Winner’s Circle

At the beginning of 2024, Lowry had not won on the PGA Tour since his 2019 Open Championship victory at Royal Portrush. He won on the DP World Tour in 2022 at BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. At the start of the year, Lowry would have no doubt targeted a victory on the PGA Tour this year, and he managed to achieve this at the Zurich Classic, alongside his good friend Rory Mcilroy. The Zurich Classic features a field of 160 split into 80 pairs as chosen by the players when committing to the tournament, so long as their partner has a tour card or sponsor exemption. On-course, the format alternates from fourballs to foursomes after each round, starting with the former and ending with the latter. Lowry and Mcilroy agreed to be partners for the tournament after the Ryder Cup as Mcilroy put it a “drunken lunch”.

Lowry and Mcilroy played excellent golf making a Sunday charge that saw them be victorious over the team of Chad Ramey and Martin Trainer in a playoff. This win was huge for Shane Lowry as both him and Mcilroy received key FedEx Cup points. Lowry said after the round “Yeah, it’s great. Saying it was much needed, but we felt like coming into the week that we both could do with a big jump in the FedEx Cup, and we both said at the start of the week, let’s go and get 400 points each. That’s what we’ve done, and I nearly feel a little bit bad taking them because Rory carried me a lot of the way. But yeah, they’re mine, and they’re not going away.” This victory propelled Lowry into the top 10 of the FedEx Cup, a spot he would stay in and around, eventually heading into the Tour Championship in 13th place, qualifying for that stage of the Fedex Cup for the first time in his career. This win for Lowry was instrumental for him having a good year.

Major Hurt

Lowry had a strong showing in the Major Championships in 2024. He finished T43 at the US Masters, T6 at the PGA Championship, T19 at the US Open and 6th at the Open Championship. Lowry shot a Saturday 62 at the PGA Championship to put himself into contention for the Sunday but could not keep up his momentum to get the victory. He had a strong major year but did suffer major hurt at the Open Championship. He also led the Open heading into the 3rd Round by 2 strokes but struggled greatly on the windy Saturday afternoon carding a 6 over 77, to trail by 3 heading into the final round. He improved on Sunday but finished 5 strokes behind Xander Schauffele.

Shane Lowry had a very strong year, even with the heartbreak of the Open Championship. He has certainly established himself as one of the key players on the PGA Tour. 2025 is set to be a huge year for Lowry as he will hope to once again be on Luke Donald’s Ryder Cup team. As well as that, Lowry will return to the scene of his major triumph in 2019, as Royal Portrush hosts the Open Championship in 2025. Could Lowry do it again?
