Marcus Rashford was once the backbone of the Manchester United attack, but he is currently going through a rough patch in his career. Most recently, Rashford was left out of Manchester United’s Premier League squad versus Manchester City. It is a slight surprise that new manager Ruben Amorim did this, but Rashford’s form has been dipping significantly for a number of years and he has shown attitude problems both on and off the pitch, so obviously the manager has seen something he does not like. It is hard to see a way back for Rashford at this moment, with even the player himself saying he is looking for a “new challenge.”

The Good Times

Marcus Rashford progressed through the youth academy at Manchester United, having been at the club since he was seven years of age. Rashford made his debut for his boyhood team in February 2016 in the Europa League, scoring twice in a 5-1 win at home to FC Midtjylland. He would make his Premier League debut just 3 days later, once again scoring twice, this time in a 3-2 win at home to rivals Arsenal. Since his debut, Rashford has made 426 appearances for the club, scoring 138 goals. His best scoring season for the club came in the 2022/2023 season, where he scored 30 goals in 56 games in all competitions. It was thought that Rashford would really kick on after this season, but in the last two seasons Rashford has accumulated just 15 goals in 67 appearances.

Rashford’s Problems

In July 2023, Rashford signed a contract extension until 2028 on a reported £325,000 a week. The 2023/2024 season featured some disciplinary issues as well as a severe dip in form. Ruben Amorim’s recent arrival at the club brought about some initial optimism in Rashford’s form, scoring in Amorim’s debut match for the club. His form has gone back to being very much inconsistent, which resulted in him being left out of the squad in his sides crucial Manchester derby versus Manchester City.

In January 2024 Rashford was disciplined by the then Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag after missing a training session. According to reports, Rashford had been out in Belfast on consecutive nights. The problem was deemed an “internal disciplinary matter” by Manchester United and was solved with Rashford returning to the team. As mentioned, Rashford was recently left out of the Manchester United squad with Amorim stating, “It is not a disciplinary thing, it’s the performance in training and in game and then I have to choose the players.” Following his recent omission from the squad Rashford was sent home from training due to illness.

"Rashford has helped the club win two FA Cup’s, two EFL Cup’s, a Community Shield and a Europa League in his time at the club!"

Rashford has recently stated that “I think I’m ready for a new challenge and the next steps”, indicating that he could be leaving Manchester United in the near future. With the January transfer window approaching, it will be highly likely that Manchester United will consider offers for the 27 year old winger. PSG have been a club often linked with signing the Englishman. A move to Saudi Arabia could also be on the cards with clubs including Al Ittihad who are managed by ex Manchester United defender Laurent Blanc, being linked with a move for Rashford.

Rashford has helped the club win two FA Cup’s, two EFL Cup’s, a Community Shield and a Europa League in his time at the club, but his performances have dramatically dipped, his attitude and work rate seem a huge problem, the fans have grown tired of him and based on his recent omission from the squad it would seem new manager Ruben Amorim does not fancy him. All signs point to Rashford being shown the exit door at his boyhood club.
